AISI 1018 mild/low carbon steel has excellent weldability and produces a uniform and harder case and it is considered as the best steel for carburized parts. AISI 1018 mild/low carbon steel offers a good balance of toughness, strength and ductility.
Provided with higher mechanical properties, AISI 1018 hot rolled steel also includes improved machining characteristics and Brinell hardness.
SAE1018 or AISI1018 Steel Bright Bars are almost always used in cold drawn or cold rolled condition as it is the cheapest form of production technique for producing bright steel bars with minimum wastage and also increases the mechanical properties. SAE1018 / AISI 1018 Steel Bright Bars are available in many sizes. Rounds, Squares, Flats and Hexagons cross sections are the most common available Mild Steel Bright Bars.

Applications
1018 has a wide variety of applications. It is used for parts requiring cold forming, such as crimping, swaging or bending. For severe bends, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking. It is highly suitable for carburized parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts, non-critical components of tool and die sets, tool holders, etc. It is used when good workability is required, on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. It is extensively used for mounting plates, spacers and fixtures. AISI 1018 is suitable for all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.
Machnieability and Weldability
This grade is easily welded by all welding processes including gas, air, and submerges arc, and the resultant welds and joints are of extremely high quality. Preheat and post-weld heating is generally not necessary.The machinability index is also reasonably good.
Tolerances
The most common tolerance is ISO h11, h10 and h9
Straightness
Acceptable straightness in AISI1018 Steel Bright Bar is 1:1000.
