What is a Disc Top Cap?

A disc top cap is a type of closure for bottles and tubes where the main sealing mechanism is a flat or slightly domed disc that sits on top of the container's opening. This disc is typically attached to a base skirt via a hinge or a tether, allowing it to flip open and snap closed.

It is a specific, popular subset of flip-top caps, characterized by its distinct disc-shaped lid.

How Does a Disc Top Cap Work?

The operation is simple and user-friendly, designed for one-handed use:

1. Opening: The user pushes up on the front edge of the disc or a small lever. The disc pivots on its hinge, revealing the dispensing opening beneath it.

2. Dispensing: The product is dispensed, often by squeezing the bottle (for liquids) or squeezing the tube (for pastes).

3. Closing: The user presses the disc down until it snaps securely back into place. An internal plug or seal on the underside of the disc engages with the orifice, creating a leak-proof closure.

   Key Components and Features

   1. Disc Lid: The flat, circular top that gives this cap its name. It provides a large surface area for the user to press on.

   2. Hinge: Connects the disc to the base. This is almost always a living hinge—a thin, flexible piece of plastic designed to withstand repeated opening and closing without breaking.

   3. Internal Plug Seal: A protruding ring or cone on the underside of the disc. This is the most critical part for preventing leaks. It fits snugly into the bottle's orifice to create an airtight and liquid-tight seal.

   4. Base Skirt / Collar: The lower threaded part that screws onto the neck of the bottle or tube.

   5. Orifice: The opening through which the product is dispensed.

   6. Tamper-Evident Band: A perforated ring that is connected to the closure skirt. It breaks away upon the first opening, providing visual evidence that the product is new and untampered with.
