Fish-derived protein hydrolysates as biostimulants were found previously to increase leaf numbers significantly, as well as the stem diameter, shoot and, root mass and succulence of a variety of plants. Additionally, the biostimulants enhanced leaf chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, and gas exchange and have the potential to be used for the sustainable production of lettuce.
The use of plant biostimulants from fish by-products can improve nutrient uptake, nutritional efficiency, plant yields and the quality of products and is a promising alternative to conventional chemical fertilizer use.
