Drill rods are precision-machined bar stock used to create various drilling tools including punches, hammers, shafts, reamers, taps, dowel pins, and drill bits. Manufactured from finely honed tool steel to precise tolerance diameters, they provide the structural backbone for drilling operations.
In drilling pipes, box and pin junctions serve as coupling elements to form the drill string. These tool joints connect to the pipe through conical threading or welding methods.
Drill pipes are heavy-duty steel conduits that transmit force to the drill bit. The rotational motion of the drill pipe enables the bit to cut through rock formations until reaching target deposits. Nonmagnetic drill collars are often used as the final pipes before the drill bit, particularly in horizontal drilling applications.
Heat treatment involves heating sections smaller than ¼" to 1450°-1475°F until heated through. For larger sections, preheat to 1200°F then raise to 1450°-1500°F, holding for one-half hour per inch of cross section. Quench in oil at 125°-150°F and temper immediately.
