Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that control equipment operation through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic motor restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component routes power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) and subsequently the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor turns to crank the engine, initiating combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
