Like most linear motors, a linear stepper motor is essentially a variation of the rotary design, cut radially and laid out flat. Similar to their rotary counterparts in operation and performance, a linear stepper motor is typically run as open-loop systems and are capable of providing high resolution at high speeds and accelerations.
Adding an encoder will enable the system to accurately track movement, but it will not be able to overcome the basic physics of the motor. For applications requiring improved positioning accuracy and resolution, servo motors provide a better solution.
