Gabions are an ideal choice for river erosion control as well as coastal management. With rising sea levels increasing risks to coastal communities, the PVC coated wire mesh used in gabions is one of the few construction materials that can withstand highly corrosive marine environments.
Gabions offer significant advantages over traditional construction materials like concrete. They are extremely strong, resistant to being washed away, permeable, and flexible enough to conform to ground movement while helping dissipate and slow water flow.

Unfold individual mattress on flat, hard ground and stamp to remove kinks. Lift the two long sides and both end panels upright and secure by tying the selvedge wires together.
Attach vertical edges of all internal diaphragms to the sides and lace with typing wire or approved interlocking wire fastener.
Align assembled mattress in required position and tie to adjacent mattress along selvedge wire. Position with internal diaphragms at right angles to slope direction or water flow.
Place stone into compartments (cells). For slopes, start from bottom. Multiple mattresses can be filled simultaneously.
Keep stone filling crew ahead of lid placement crew. Securely tie lids to side-tops, end panels, and inner partitions.
Telescope or cut mattresses to form when necessary (e.g., for radius placement). For sharp curves, may need to cut diagonally into triangular sections.
