API Spec. 11AX provides letter designations for various rod and tubing pumps available for different barrel thicknesses and plunger types.

The comprehensive API designation includes the following components:
- Nominal tubing size (1.9- to 4.5-in. OD) - 2 digits
- Basic bore diameter (1.0625 to 3.75 in.) - 3 digits
- Pump type (rod or tubing) - R or T indicator
- Barrel type (heavy, thin, or X type) - single alpha character
- Seating-assembly location (top or bottom) - A, B, or T designation
- Seating assembly type (cup or mechanical) - C or M indicator
- Barrel length (ft) - single digit
- Nominal plunger length (ft.) - single digit
- Upper extension length (in.) - single digit
- Lower extension length (in.) - single digit
