40mm Plastic Foam Pump Dispenser Facial Cleanser Liquid Outer Spring Foam Pump
What is a Trigger Sprayer?
A trigger sprayer is a handheld, mechanical pumping device that dispenses a liquid in a spray, stream, or mist pattern when its trigger is squeezed. It is commonly found on bottles containing cleaning products, garden chemicals, personal care products, and more.
The key difference from a foam pump is the output: a trigger sprayer creates a spray of liquid droplets, while a foam pump creates an aerated foam.
How Does a Trigger Sprayer Work? (The Mechanism)
The operation is a classic example of a positive displacement pump utilizing a piston and one-way valves. Here’s the step-by-step process:
-
Squeezing the Trigger (Downstroke):
-
Squeezing the trigger pushes a piston forward inside a cylinder.
-
This pressurizes the liquid already in the cylinder.
-
The inlet valve (at the base of the dip tube) closes to prevent backflow.
-
The pressurized liquid is forced out through the nozzle.
-
-
Releasing the Trigger (Upstroke/Recovery):
-
Releasing the trigger allows a spring to return the piston to its original position.
-
This creates a vacuum inside the cylinder.
-
The vacuum closes the outlet valve in the nozzle and opens the inlet valve at the bottom of the dip tube.
-
This suction draws liquid up the dip tube from the bottle and into the cylinder, ready for the next squeeze.
-
-
The Nozzle: The liquid is forced through a small orifice in the nozzle. Many trigger sprayers have an adjustable nozzle that can be rotated to change the spray pattern:
-
Spray/Mist: A fine mist for wide, even coverage (e.g., for glass cleaner).
-
Stream: A concentrated jet of liquid for targeted application (e.g., for removing stains).
-
Shut/Off: A position that blocks the flow entirely for safe storage.
-
Many modern sprayers also feature a trigger lock to keep the sprayer on for continuous spraying without having to hold the trigger down.
