90 Platinum 10 Iridium Wire description
The alloy has been used in "non-standard" thermocouples, electrical contacts and electrodes in medical research. This alloy is harder and mechanically stronger than platinum.
This wire has a composition of 90% platinum and 10% iridium and is widely used in the assembly of microelectrode probes. Iridium is a platinum group metal that is dense and hard and adds strength to the wire. A 90/10 platinum-iridium alloy with 10% iridium can be cast, welded, machined, and stamped; it is ductile and ductile; it can be work hardened; and it does not oxidize easily. Alloys are generally produced by vacuum arc melting or induction melting.
Other uses of platinum-iridium alloys include electrical contacts, spark plugs, electric explosive devices, medical leads and electrodes, thermistors, catalytic applications, jewelry, pen tips, surgical pins.
Some uses of platinum-iridium alloys include pacemakers, which are used to treat heart conditions that cause slow or irregular heartbeats, and typically contain at least two platinum-iridium electrodes through which electrical impulses are transmitted to stabilize the heartbeat.
