Ballast is used in sailboats to provide torque against lateral forces on the sail.
We know that on large modern ships, the keel is made or filled with high-density materials, such as lead. However, lead is not environmentally friendly, so tungsten heavy alloys are increasingly being used as tungsten counterweights for sailing ships due to their high density and non-toxicity. By placing the tungsten counterweight as low as possible (usually in a large bulb at the bottom of the keel), the maximum righting moment can be extracted from a given mass. The traditional ballast in the hull is stone or sand.
