Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4/LFP) is the safest mainstream lithium-ion battery type with no risk of thermal runaway. These batteries offer extremely long cycle life (up to 10,000 cycles), high discharge/recharge rates up to C/2 continuous, and round-trip efficiency up to 98%.
Essential for protecting LFP batteries and ensuring optimal performance:
- Low Voltage Protection: Auto-disconnect at 10.0V
- Over Voltage Protection: Auto-disconnect at 14.8V
- Short Circuit Protection: Safe auto-disconnect
- Reverse Polarity Protection: Safe auto-disconnect

LFP cells fail if voltage drops below 2.5V or exceeds 4.2V. Unlike lead-acid batteries, LFP cells don't auto-balance, requiring BMS for:
- Preventing cell under-voltage by disconnecting loads
- Preventing cell overvoltage by controlling charge current
- System shutdown during over-temperature conditions
LiFePO4 batteries are the safest lithium battery type - they won't overheat or catch fire even when punctured. The cathode material is non-hazardous and environmentally safe.
Typical lifespan: 5-15 years or 2000-8000 charge cycles (one cycle = fully charged to fully discharged and recharged).
For solar applications, use LiFePO4/Lithium Ion solar controllers instead of SLA controllers. Lead acid controllers provide constant pulse current that can damage PCB protection circuits over time.
