Brake Magnet Amperage Testing Procedure
To ensure proper brake magnet performance, follow this testing procedure:
- Disconnect the trailer from the tow vehicle before testing
- Sever the brake magnet wires and connect an ammeter between the positive battery terminal of a separate 12V power source and one magnet wire
- Connect the other magnet wire to the negative battery terminal
- For 10 and 12 inch brake assemblies: each magnet should read 3.2 to 4.0 amps at 12-13 volts
- For 7 inch brake assemblies: magnet should read 3.0 to 3.2 amps
Replace magnets if amperage readings exceed specifications or if readings are below specified amounts indicating bad leads.
