What is an overburden well?
Overburden wells are typically constructed in geological materials above bedrock, composed of sands and gravels. Most water wells include a well screen that allows groundwater entry while filtering out sand and other materials.
Why is overburden important?
In petroleum systems, overburden rock overlays source rock and contributes to thermal maturation through increased temperatures at greater depths. The age and thickness of overburden rock determine burial rates and influence heating processes.
Where do they put overburden?
The primary use for large volumes of overburden produced by surface mining is to remediate and reclaim the original excavation area. Returning sand, rock, and clay helps rebuild soil levels and restore plant life.
