Forged Carbon Steel Flange - ASTM A105/A105N
Carbon steel flanges manufactured in accordance with ASTM A105 are designed for piping applications in ambient and higher-temperature pressure systems. These forged components meet rigorous industry standards including ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, ASME B16.48, ASME B16.36, MSS SP 44, API 605, and API 6A.
Manufacturing Process & Heat Treatment
ASTM A105 flanges are manufactured as one-piece components through a hot-forging process, either die forging or open-die forging. This compressive hot-working operation ensures metal flows in the designed direction during plastic deformation, creating a disc-like product close to the finished flange dimensions. The forging process consolidates the material to produce a wrought steel structure, which is subsequently machined to exact specifications.
As a Group 1.1 material per ASME B16.5, heat treatment for Class 150 and Class 300 flanges is generally not required. For higher pressure classes (above Class 300) or when specified by end users, heat treatments including annealing, normalizing, normalizing and tempering, or quenching and tempering may be performed. The A105N designation indicates normalized condition.
