A sofa and mattress shredder is an industrial device designed specifically for large, mixed-material furniture. It uses shearing, tearing, and squeezing to break down used sofas, mattresses, and other items into uniform, small pieces or particles. Working Principle
Power Drive System
- Motor and Reducer: The motor rotates using electromagnetic force, which is then reduced and torque is increased by the reducer to ensure sufficient tearing force for the blades.
- Spindle and Cutter Head: The spindle features a hexagonal design with full quenching and tempering treatment, resulting in high wear resistance, high torque resistance, and resistance to bending and deformation.
Crushing Mechanism
- Shearing Action: The moving and fixed blades move relative to each other, cutting the material fibers.
- Tearing Action: The moving blade tip contacts the cylindrical surface of the spacer, tearing hard materials (such as wood and metal).
- Squeezing Action: The torque and speed differential of the blade shaft create a tearing force, crushing soft materials (such as foam and fabric).
- Intelligent Sorting: After crushing, the material undergoes magnetic separation, air separation, and vibratory screening to separate metal, wood, foam, and other materials.
Discharge Control
The screen determines the particle size, and unqualified materials are repeatedly crushed within the machine chamber until they meet the required particle size. Metal materials are automatically discharged into a buffer device through a magnetic separator, while other materials are transported to a truck via an enclosed belt conveyor.

Process Flow
The bulky waste shredding and sorting line efficiently processes large pieces of waste, enabling resource recycling and harmless disposal.
Pretreatment
Bulky waste is manually or mechanically loaded onto a conveyor for initial sorting, removing non-trash items (such as rocks and large metal objects) and hazardous materials (such as glass and sharp objects) to prevent damage to downstream equipment.
Shredding
The pre-treated bulky waste is conveyed by a conveyor to a shredder. The shredder uses the shearing, squeezing, and tearing forces generated by the rotating blades to break the bulky waste into smaller pieces, typically 5-30 cm in size, for subsequent sorting.
Magnetic Separation
After shredding, the material enters a magnetic separator, where the magnet's attraction to ferromagnetic materials (such as nails, wire, and metal parts) separates the ferrous metal for recycling.
Eddy Current Separation
After magnetic separation, the material enters an eddy current separator. This device uses an alternating magnetic field to generate eddy currents in non-ferrous metals, separating materials such as copper and aluminum.
Wind Separation
The airflow generated by the fan separates lighter materials (such as plastics and fabrics) from heavier materials (such as stones and ceramics) by taking advantage of differences in material density.
