D-type connectors most commonly consist of two and sometimes more parallel rows of connections. The connectors feature a D-format metal shell that provides mechanical strength and limited screening capabilities. The metal shells of the plug and socket make contact to enhance screening effectiveness.
- Panel mounting connectors are secured using nuts with additional threading to prevent mating connectors from working loose
- Free connectors can have backshells that provide screening and connect to cable screens, or plastic versions offer protection
- Built-in strain relief for cable protection
- Standard pin spacing: approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) between pins with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart
