D-type connectors most commonly consist of two and sometimes more parallel rows of connections. The connectors feature a D-format metal shell that provides mechanical strength and limited electromagnetic screening. When mated, the metal shells of the plug and socket make contact to enhance screening effectiveness.

Panel mounting connectors are typically secured using nuts with additional threading that allows the mating connector to be locked in place, preventing loosening. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells that provide either screening (metal) or protection (plastic), along with cable strain relief.

The pins in common two-row connector types (9, 15, 25, and 37 way) are spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities can be achieved using additional rows of pins.
