D-type connectors typically consist of two or more parallel rows of connections enclosed within a D-format metal shell. This design provides mechanical strength and limited electromagnetic screening, as the metal shells of both plug and socket make contact when connected.

Panel mounting connectors are secured using nuts with additional threading that allows mating connectors to be firmly attached, preventing loosening during operation. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells that offer either screening (when metal) connected to cable shielding, or protection (when plastic). These backshells also provide essential strain relief for the cable.

In common two-row connector configurations (such as 9, 15, 25, and 37-way types), pins are spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities are achieved through additional rows of pins.
