Ferritic Martensitic Seamless Tube ASTM A268 TP409 1.4512 S40900
This specification covers a number of grades of nominal-wall-thickness, stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and high-temperature service. Most of these grades are commonly known as the “straight-chromium” types and are characterized by being ferromagnetic.
The tubes shall be made by the seamless or welded process with no filler metal added, tubes shall be reheated to a temperature of 1200.F [650.C] or higher and cooled to meet the requirements of this specification, All tubes shall be free of excessive mill scale, suitable for inspection. A slight amount of oxidation will not be considered as scale.
Grade 409 stainless steel is a Ferritic steel that offers good mechanical properties and high-temperature corrosion resistance. It is commonly considered as a chromium stainless steel, with applications in exhaust systems of automobiles and applications that demand weldability.
TP409 stainless grade combines the following characteristics:
-Basic corrosion and oxidation resistance
-Composition balanced for optimum formability
-Weldable only in thin sections due to fully ferritic structure
-Low cost and limited cost variation due to low alloy content
