Corrosion Resistance
- Pitting Corrosion: Has a high pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN), typically around 40. This makes it suitable for use in aggressive environments, such as those containing chlorides.
- Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): Better resistance to SCC compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, making it a preferred choice in chloride-rich environments.
- General Corrosion: Excellent resistance to general corrosion in a variety of environments, including acids.
Testing and Standards
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Pipes are often subjected to NDT methods (like ultrasonic testing) to ensure integrity and detect any internal flaws.
- Dimensional and Mechanical Tests: Encompasses tests for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness as per the standard requirements.
- Hydrostatic Testing: Each pipe may also undergo hydrostatic testing to ensure it can withstand pressure without leaking.
Fabrication and Forming
- Welding:
- Suitable for welding using most conventional methods (TIG, MIG, etc.).
- It is recommended to use filler materials that match the composition of the base metal to ensure corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
- Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is not typically required, but it should be controlled to prevent overheating.
- Cold Working: Duplex steels can be cold worked, but this should be done carefully to avoid work hardening, which can lead to reduced ductility.
