ASTM A234 standard covers forged carbon steel and alloy steel fittings for seamless and welded structures covered by the latest versions of ASME B16.9, B16.11, MSS-SP-79, MSS-SP-83, MSS-SP-95, and MSS-SP-97. These accessories are used in the manufacturing of pressure pipelines and pressure vessels and can be used at medium to high temperatures. Accessories that differ from these ASME and MSS standards should be provided in accordance with the supplementary requirements S58 of specification A960/A960M.


ASTM A234 WP5 alloy steel pipe fittings comply with ASTM A234 "Specification for Forged Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel Pipe fittings for Medium and High Temperature Service". They belong to low-alloy steel, containing chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo), enhancing oxidation resistance and high temperature strength. They are mainly suitable for working temperature range of -29 ° C~577 ° C (-20 ° F~1070 ° F) and are suitable for high temperature and high pressure environments.

ASTM A234 WP5 Alloy Pipe Fittings Manufacturing and Heat Treatment Requirements


1.Manufacturing Process: Pipe fittings are manufactured by forging, rolling, machining, or a combination of these processes.

2.Heat Treatment: All WP5 pipe fittings must undergo a normalizing and tempering heat treatment after final forming.

  • Normalizing involves heating the pipe fitting to above the austenitizing temperature, holding it evenly, and then cooling it in still air. This refines the grain size, homogenizes the microstructure, and improves mechanical properties.
  • Tempering involves reheating the pipe fitting to an appropriate temperature below the critical point after normalizing, typically in the range of 650-750°C, holding it for a sufficient time, and then cooling it, usually in air. This relieves normalizing and cold working stresses, improves toughness, ductility, and dimensional stability, and adjusts the ultimate strength and hardness. 

Proper heat treatment is critical to ensuring that ASTM A234 WP5 alloy pipe fittings achieve the required strength, toughness, high-temperature properties, and hydrogen corrosion resistance.
