Product Description
ASME SA213 TP347 Heat Exchanger Tube Pickled And Annealed Stainless Steel Seamless Tube

ASTM A213 TP347 Seamless Tube is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel tube specifically designed for high-temperature, high-pressure service where resistance to intergranular corrosion and creep is paramount. Its niobium-stabilized composition sets it apart from grades like 304 and 321, making it the material of choice for critical components in power generation and other demanding industrial applications.

Detailed Advantages of TP347 Tube

1. Superior Resistance to Sensitization and Intergranular Corrosion

This is the most significant advantage of TP347.

  • The Problem with TP304 (Sensitization): When TP304 is heated in the temperature range of 425°C - 815°C (800°F - 1500°F), carbon atoms inside the steel migrate to the grain boundaries and react with chromium to form chromium carbides. This depletes the chromium in the areas adjacent to the grain boundaries, making those zones susceptible to rapid attack—a phenomenon known as intergranular corrosion (IGC). This process is called sensitization, and it can occur during slow cooling after welding or during high-temperature service.

  • The TP347 Solution: TP347 is "stabilized" by adding Niobium (Nb). Niobium has a much stronger affinity for carbon than chromium does. Therefore, the niobium atoms preferentially combine with carbon to form niobium carbides (NbC), leaving the chromium in solution to maintain corrosion resistance.

  • Result: TP347 is immune to sensitization and will not suffer from intergranular corrosion in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) or during high-temperature service. This makes it vastly superior for any application that involves welding and subsequent exposure to corrosive media.

2. Higher Creep and Stress Rupture Strength

  • The Science: The fine, stable niobium carbides (NbC) dispersed throughout the microstructure of TP347 act as strengthening agents that impede the movement of dislocations within the metal crystal lattice at high temperatures.

  • The Advantage: This gives TP347 significantly higher strength under long-term exposure to high temperatures and stress (a property known as creep strength). For a given design pressure and temperature, a TP347 tube can potentially have a longer service life or withstand higher stresses than a TP304 tube.

  • Application: This makes TP347 the preferred choice for critical superheater and reheater tubes in power boilers where steam temperatures are highest.

3. Better High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

  • While both grades form a protective chromium oxide layer, the stability of the microstructure in TP347 (no chromium depletion) allows it to maintain this protective scale more effectively during prolonged high-temperature exposure and thermal cycling.

  • This leads to marginally better resistance to oxidation and scaling compared to TP304 at temperatures typically above 800°C (1470°F).

4. Superior Performance in Cyclic High-Temperature Service

  • The stabilized structure of TP347 is less prone to microstructural changes (like sigma phase formation) under prolonged heat. This makes it more suitable for applications with frequent thermal cycling (heating up and cooling down), which is common in many process plants and power stations.

Application

TP347 seamless tubes are used in demanding environments where both corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength are required:

  1. Power Generation Boilers: Superheater and reheater tubes, where steam temperatures can exceed 600°C (1112°F).

  2. Heat Exchangers: In chemical processing, petrochemical, and oil & gas industries for handling corrosive process streams at elevated temperatures.

  3. Fossil Fuel and Nuclear Power Plants: For critical components exposed to high-pressure steam.

  4. Aerospace: Certain high-temperature engine and airframe components.
