ASTM A182 specification covers forged low alloy and stainless steel piping fittings used in pressure systems, including flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts that conform to specified dimensions or size standards. And it covers various grades of low-alloy steels as well as ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, and ferritic austenitic stainless steels. F51 is a duplex steel material grade code under the ASTM A182 standard. The more common common name is 2205 duplex steel, which comes from its typical chemical composition ratio of about 22% chromium and 5% nickel.

Nondestructive Testing and Quality Control for ASTM A182 F51 Duplex Stainless Steel Flanges
1.Liquid Penetrant Testing: This is almost mandatory and is used to detect surface defects in critical areas such as the flange sealing surface and grooves. Linear defects on the sealing surface are not permitted.
2.Ultrasonic Testing: Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is required for large or high-pressure flanges to detect internal defects.
3.Corrosion Testing: Intergranular corrosion testing is typically required to ensure proper heat treatment and the absence of chromium carbide precipitation.
4.Ferrite Content Measurement: A ferrite meter is used to ensure the ferrite content is within the ideal range of 35-55% to verify the effectiveness of the heat treatment.
5.Material Verification: A spectrometer is used to verify that the chemical composition meets the standard.
