Carbon Steel ASTM A179 A1060 G Type Embedded Fin Tube - For Heat Exchangers & Condensers
Product Overview & Specification
This product is a high-efficiency Embedded G-Type Fin Tube designed for demanding heat transfer applications. It combines the excellent thermal conductivity and formability of a seamless low-carbon steel base tube with the superior strength and wear resistance of high-carbon steel fins.
The core tube is manufactured in strict compliance with ASTM A179/A179M, the standard specification for seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes used in heat exchangers and condensers . The fins are made from AISI/ASTM 1060 high-carbon steel. The "G-Type" or embedded fin design typically involves a fin strip wound into a machined helical groove on the base tube and secured by the raised metal, ensuring a permanent, metallurgical bond with outstanding heat transfer efficiency and mechanical durability.
Material & Structure
This is a composite product utilizing two distinct steel grades for optimal performance:
-
Base Tube: Made from ASTM A179 seamless cold-drawn steel. This material is chosen for its consistent quality, good ductility, and excellent thermal conductivity, making it ideal for the pressure-containing component of a heat transfer tube .
-
Fins (Embedded): Made from AISI 1060 (ASTM A1060) high-carbon steel. This grade is selected for applications requiring higher strength, hardness, and wear resistance than lower-carbon steels can provide . The high carbon content gives the fins robustness in harsh operating environments.
Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties
The following tables summarize the key specifications for the constituent materials. Note that ASTM A179 is a product standard for tubes, while A1060 refers to a material grade.
Typical Chemical Composition (Weight %):
| Element | ASTM A179 Base Tube (Typical) | AISI/ASTM 1060 Fin Material |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.06 - 0.18% | 0.55 - 0.65% |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.27 - 0.63% | 0.60 - 0.90% |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.035% | ≤ 0.040% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.035% | ≤ 0.050% |
Key Mechanical Properties:
| Property | ASTM A179 Base Tube (Requirements) | AISI/ASTM 1060 Fin Material (Annealed Condition) |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 325 MPa (47 ksi) | ≈ 620 MPa (89 ksi) |
| Yield Strength | ≥ 180 MPa (26 ksi) | ≈ 350 MPa (50 ksi) |
| Elongation | ≥ 35% (in 2-inches or 50 mm) | ≈ 15% |
The final finned tube product undergoes multiple quality tests as per standards, which may include hydrostatic testing, flattening tests, flaring tests, and hardness tests to ensure integrity .
Primary Applications
