ASTM A105N Carbon Steel Forgings ASME Self Reinforced Nozzles for Pressure Vessels
ASTM A105N Carbon Steel Forged Self Reinforced Nozzles for Pressure Vessels
ASTM A105N Carbon Steel Self-Reinforced Nozzle is a pipe fitting (nozzle) used as an inlet or outlet connection on a pressure vessel. It is forged from a single piece of carbon steel and is designed so that its geometry provides the necessary reinforcement to handle internal pressure, eliminating the need for a separate reinforcement pad. It is a high-integrity connection point welded into a pressure vessel (like a heat exchanger, separator, or storage tank) or a large pipeline.
-
Standard Nozzles: A standard nozzle (a piece of pipe welded into a hole) often requires an external reinforcement pad (also known as a "repad"). This is a thick steel plate welded around the nozzle on the outside of the vessel to add the necessary strength.
-
Self-Reinforced Nozzles: This type of nozzle is forged with extra thickness built into its shape. The reinforcement is achieved through the geometry of the forging itself—typically by incorporating a gradual, integral taper or "hub" where the nozzle meets the vessel wall.
-
The Nozzle Neck: It has a thicker cross-section at the base (the weld prep area) that provides the necessary area for reinforcement without needing a separate pad.
-
The Boss: For forged self-reinforced nozzles like "Long Weld Necks," the entire transition from the pipe end to the vessel connection is a heavy, tapered forging.

Advantages of Self-Reinforced Design:
-
Eliminates a Potential Leak Path: The standard "repad" design creates two weld seams that are potential sites for corrosion and leaks. A self-reinforced nozzle has a single, better-designed weld.
-
Reduces Stress Concentrations: The gradual, contoured shape minimizes stress concentrations at the junction, leading to a longer fatigue life, especially under cyclic loading.
-
Simplifies Inspection: With fewer welds, non-destructive examination (NDE) like radiography or ultrasonic testing is simpler and more effective.
-
Better for High-Pressure or Cyclic Service: It is the preferred design for severe service conditions.
Applications
1. High-Pressure and High-Temperature Services
2. Cyclic and Fatigue Service (Vibration and Temperature Swings)
3. Sour Service (Wet H₂S Environments)
4. Low-Temperature Services (Cold climates or Chilling)
5. Critical Rotating Equipment (Compressors and Pumps)
6. Heat Exchangers (Especially Reboilers and Coolers)
