he unique properties of TP317L make it the material of choice for specific, demanding industrial applications where other steels would fail prematurely .
Exceptional Chemical Resistance: The higher percentage of molybdenum (3-4%) is the key. It gives TP317L outstanding resistance to attack from sulfuric, phosphoric, and formic acids. For example, in boiling 10% sulfuric acid, TP317L corrodes at a rate of 298.28 mils per year (mmpy), while 316L corrodes at a much higher rate of 635.7 mmpy . This makes it ideal for chemical processing equipment .
Superior Performance in Chloride-Rich Environments: The combination of molybdenum and nitrogen in some variants provides a high "Pitting Resistance Equivalent" (PRE) number, making TP317L significantly more resistant to the pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides (e.g., saltwater) . This is critical for applications in marine environments, pollution control (flue-gas desulfurization), and pulp and paper manufacturing .
Reliability in High-Temperature Service: TP317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures compared to conventional stainless steels . It also resists scaling up to about 1650°F (899°C) . This reliability is essential for components in power generation, such as condensers, and in refinery operations .
