ASTM A789 / ASME SA789 are standard specifications for seamless and weldable ferritic/austenitic duplex stainless steel tubes, suitable for heat exchangers, condensers, and general corrosive applications. UNS S32205 is the most widely used grade of duplex stainless steel, characterized by its unique two-phase microstructure, with approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite, combining the good toughness of austenitic stainless steel with the high strength and stress corrosion resistance of ferritic stainless steel.
 
ASTM A789 and UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel tubes are "mainstay" duplex stainless steel tubing solutions designed for chloride-containing environments, acidic media, and high-strength applications. They have approximately twice the yield strength of 316L, significantly better pitting resistance than austenitic stainless steel, and are inherently immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
 
Duplex stainless steel UNS32205 is the top choice for cost-effectiveness in high-sulfur, chlorine-containing corrosion-prone areas.
 
It is suitable for high-pressure air-cooled tubing in hydrogenation processes, air-cooling of pre-hydrogenated products, and acidic condensation lines containing NH₄HS.
