Spectacle Blind is essentially a simple valve. It is installed in the line between the two flanges and bolted in place. One side of the spectacle curtain is open (clapboard), while the other side of the spectacle curtain is blank (blind or spade).
To go from open to closed, except the pivot bolt is removed and the eyeglass shade is rotated on its center hole, so the blind side is between the flanges. Then install and tighten the bolts. The side hanging out of the pipe is a clear indication of whether the pipe is open or closed.
It is typically used for maintenance when a section of pipeline or equipment needs to be isolated. Because it's a semi-permanent isolation, it's very e, and ety is often the mindset behind using glasses blind in maintenance operations. Compared to valves, they are cheap and strong.
