Stainless Steel Grade Information
What is SS 304?
Type 304 stainless steel is a T 300 series austenitic stainless steel containing a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with maximum 0.08% carbon. Defined as a chromium-nickel austenitic alloy, Grade 304 is the standard "18/8" stainless steel commonly used in pans and cooking tools.
Difference Between SS316 and SS304
The primary difference is chemical composition: SS316 contains 2-3% molybdenum by weight, while SS304 has only trace amounts. This higher molybdenum content provides superior corrosion resistance in grade 316.
SS304 Quality Assessment
Both 304 and 316 stainless steels are durable with excellent corrosion and rust resistance. SS304 is the most versatile and widely used austenitic stainless steel globally due to its exceptional corrosion resistance properties.
Identifying SS304
For spot checking, conduct a spark test using a grinder. SS304 produces reddish orange sparks that are thin and don't travel far, while SS202 generates yellow, thick sparks that fly further distances.
