Thermocouple Grade Wire or Extension Grade Wire?
Thermocouple Wire (cable) is available in two grades; Thermocouple Grade wire & Extension Grade wire.
Typically, thermocouple grade is used to make the actual thermocouple sensor or sensing point (junction) itself , whereas thermocouple extension wire (cable) is used to connect thermocouple sensors to associated instrumentation systems, usually via an industrial terminal enclosure or thermocouple connector.
Type N thermocouple grade wire has greater emf stability and corrosion resistance than Type K, however the combination develops a lower emf output and cannot, therefore, be directly substituted.
The Type N thermocouple is composed of a nickel-14% chromium-1 1/2% silicon (+) wire versus a nickel 4 1/2% silicon-1/10% magnesium (-) wire. It was developed to be used under the same conditions as a Type K. Type N should be used in oxidizing or inert atmospheres with a service temperature range between -200°C and 1260°C (-330°F to 2300°F). The addition of silicon and chromium makes this type of thermocouple more resistant to Green-Rot and less drifting when compared to a Type K. The negative element, or NN, of a Type N thermocouple can be described by any of the following names: Nisil, nickel-silicon. The positive element, or NP, of a Type N thermocouple can be described by any of the following names: Nicrosil, nickel-chromium-silicon.
Type N Thermocouple (Nicrosil / Nisil): The Type N shares the same accuracy and temperature limits as the Type K. The type N is slightly more expensive. The type N has better repeatability between 572F to 932F (300C to 500C) compared to the type K.
Type N Temperature Range:
- Maximum continuous operating temperature: up to 2,300F (1,260C)
- Short term use: 2,336F (1,280C)
- Thermocouple grade wire, -454 to 2300F (-270 to 1,260C)
- Extension wire, 32 to 392F (0 to 200C)
Type N Accuracy (whichever is greater):
- Standard: +/- 2.2C or +/- .75%
- Special Limits of Error: +/- 1.1C or 0.4%
Consideration for bare wire type E thermocouple applications:
- The type N holds up better to oxidation at high temperatures when compared to the type K.
Characteristics:
The thermocouple wires have excellent performance and are extensively used in the temperature measurement and control in different fields,
such as metallurgy, chemical industry, petroleum industry, machinery-electric industry, energy industry, agriculture and military industry.
