FeCrAl (Ferrochrome Aluminum) alloy heating wire is a type of resistance wire used in heating elements, particularly in applications where high temperatures are required. This alloy typically contains iron, chromium, and aluminum as its primary components.

These wires are known for their high resistivity, which allows them to generate heat efficiently when an electric current passes through them. They are commonly used in various heating applications such as industrial furnaces, household appliances like toasters and ovens, and in the automotive industry.

 

Alloy composition and characteristics

 

  • Chromium: Chromium provides good resistance to oxidation. At high temperatures, a chromium - rich oxide layer forms on the surface of the wire. This layer protects the underlying metal from further oxidation and corrosion. For example, in a similar way to how stainless steel (which also contains chromium) resists rust, the chromium in the ferro - chrome - aluminum wire helps it withstand the harsh conditions of high - temperature environments.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum also contributes to the wire's resistance to oxidation. It forms a stable oxide (alumina, Al₂O₃) on the surface. This oxide layer is very adherent and acts as a barrier against oxygen and other corrosive agents. Moreover, the presence of aluminum can also affect the electrical resistivity of the alloy.
  • Iron: Iron is the base metal that provides the structural integrity of the wire. The combination of these three elements creates an alloy with unique electrical and thermal properties.

 

The properties of FeCrAl alloy heating wire include high electrical resistivity, good oxidation resistance at high temperatures, and the ability to withstand high operating temperatures. These characteristics make them suitable for applications where stable and reliable heating is required under harsh conditions.
