Product Description
ASTM TM2 Thermal Bimetal Alloy Strip Overview
Thermal bimetal strip is a composite material consisting of two or more metal layers with different thermal expansion coefficients, bonded together along the entire interface. This construction enables shape changes in response to temperature variations. The layer with high expansion coefficient serves as the active layer, while the low expansion coefficient layer functions as the passive component.
For applications requiring high resistivity while maintaining similar thermal sensitivity, an intermediate layer of varying thickness can be added between the two primary layers to function as a shunt layer, enabling precise control of resistivity values.
Key Characteristics
- High heat sensitivity and high resistivity properties
- Lower elastic modulus and allowable stress
- Enhanced instrument sensitivity
- Compact size for faster response times
- Temperature-dependent deformation for mechanical work conversion
Material Specifications
| Shop Sign | TM2 |

| Middle Layer | Not Applicable |
| Low Expansion Layer | Ni36 |
Manufacturing Process
Cold rolling → Degreasing → Pickling → Annealing → Cold rolling → Degreasing → Pickling → Annealing → Final cold rolling to meet thermal bimetal strip requirements
Welding Performance
Thermal bimetal components are not suitable for flame or electric arc brazing/welding. However, spot welding and resistance welding can be performed. Prior to welding, surface oxidation films, grease, and contaminants must be thoroughly removed. Special care is required during welding due to the high expansion layer's low melting point and surface oxidation characteristics.
Applications
Widely used in control systems and temperature sensors for measuring instruments, where thermal energy conversion to mechanical work enables automatic temperature control functionality.
