Forged Pipe Fittings Threaded Hex Plug ASTM A815 UNS S32202 Duplex Stainless Steel ASME B16.11
Forged Pipe Fittings Threaded Hex Plug ASTM A815 UNS S32202 Duplex Stainless Steel ASME B16.11
1. Product Description
This product is a forged threaded hex plug manufactured from UNS S32202 lean duplex stainless steel in accordance with ASTM A815 and ASME B16.11 standards . UNS S32202 is a low-nickel, molybdenum-free duplex stainless steel with a dual-phase microstructure of approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite . It offers mechanical strength approximately twice that of 304L while providing comparable corrosion resistance . The hex head design provides a convenient wrenching surface for installation and removal. This fitting is designed for threaded (NPT) connection to permanently seal the end of a pipe or fitting in small-bore piping systems.

3. Application / Usage
This hex plug is ideal for cost-effective sealing applications in mildly corrosive environments:
-
Potable Water Systems: Storage tanks, distribution pipelines
-
Pulp and Paper Industry: Process piping requiring economical corrosion resistance
-
General Construction: Piping systems where 304L would typically be specified
-
Food & Beverage: Storage and transportation of beer, juice, soda, and wine
-
Wastewater Treatment: Near-neutral chloride-containing environments
4. Advantages
-
Superior Strength: Yield strength (~450 MPa) is approximately double that of 304L (200 MPa), enabling thinner wall designs and weight reduction
-
Cost-Effective: Low nickel content and no molybdenum provide significant material cost savings and price stability compared to austenitic grades
-
Corrosion Resistance: PREN value >26 provides pitting resistance comparable to 304L in most environments
-
Simple Operation: Hex head allows easy installation and removal with standard wrenches; no welding required
-
Reliable Seal: NPT threads provide a leak-proof mechanical seal when properly installed with thread sealant
5. Functions
The threaded hex plug provides a permanent, pressure-rated seal for the end of a pipe, fitting, or valve. It is used to close off unused branch connections, provide access points for system inspection or cleaning, or serve as a test port. The hex head design allows for easy wrench tightening and removal, facilitating system maintenance and modification.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Preparation: Clean pipe threads and plug threads thoroughly; remove all dirt, oil, and debris
-
Thread Sealant: Apply PTFE tape or pipe dope to male threads to ensure a reliable seal
-
Thread Engagement: Screw the plug into the threaded opening by hand, then tighten with a wrench
-
Avoid Over-tightening: Do not exceed recommended torque to prevent cracking the fitting body or damaging threads
-
Inspection: After installation, perform leak test per system requirements
7. Precautions
-
Thread Compatibility: NPT and BSP threads are not interchangeable. Verify thread type per system specification
-
Temperature Limitation: Maximum corrosion service temperature is approximately 440°C (820°F)
-
Avoid Overload: Do not subject to harmful loads and forces other than internal pressures
-
Lean Duplex Properties: While offering good corrosion resistance, UNS S32202 is not equivalent to higher alloyed duplex grades (e.g., 2205) in severely corrosive or high-chloride environments
-
Crevice Corrosion: In potable water applications, use adequate geometry to avoid crevices
8. Shipping & Delivery
