What is the difference between a carbon fiber sheet and a carbon fiber plate?

Both terms can apply to carbon fiber. The term "sheet" implies a thin light material like a sheet of paper, whereas "plate" implies a heavy thick material like a 3/4-inch steel plate. We feel that the word "sheet" is more appropriate for carbon fiber because carbon fiber is typically lightweight and is typically used in thin sections due to its tremendous strength. On the other hand, we produce 1 ½ in carbon fiber that would definitely be considered plate. Both terms appear on our website because people will use them interchangeably.

Why are there diffrenent weaves of carbon fibre fabric?

Carbon fiber comes in different weaves optimized for different uses. For example, the standard twill weave is a good all-purpose fabric. Unidirectional fabric is good for adding strength and stiffness in one direction. Plain weave is good for delicate layups and some patterns are just designed for a unique look!

All 3k carbon fibre sheets and plates have a glass transition temperature of 90oC i.e. maximum use temperature, where if a higher temperature is required please shop for our HI-Temp range.

Cutting, Shaping & Finishing

Carbon fibre laminates can be cut with CNC routers, waterjet, and manual methods with appropriate cutting tools. We recommend carbide tools, abrasive-type cutters, or diamond-coated tools. Our carbon fibre sheets are easily edge sanded by hand or belt sanders allowing you to trim close and sand to final dimensions for a smooth and clean edge.
