Yttrium metal is an iron-grey rare earth metal. It is used as an alloying element in aluminium (Al), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and magnesium (Mg) alloys.
Yttrium metal, or yttrium, reacts with water to form hydroxide. In larger pieces, however, yttrium is relatively stable in air. In metallurgy, small additions of yttrium are used for grain refinement, for example in iron-chromium-aluminium heating wire alloys, chromium, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium alloys. It has a strength-increasing effect in aluminium and magnesium alloys.
