How to choose among TN/STN/FSTN display?
TN [Twisted Nematic]: very cheap and fast response. But the view angle (5:1 to 10:1) is quite limited (Usually from above or below), the contrast is also lower compared with other types of display . Normally black on gray or blue on gray display.
Typical Applications: calculators, simple industrial devices, low-cost handheld gadgets.
 
STN [Super Twisted Nematic]: Price a little higher than TN. Better viewing angle and contrast (8:1 to 15:1) than TN. But the response is slower than TN. You can choose positive(dark text on light background) or negative ( light text on dark background). Support larger screen and more characters.
Typical Applications: mid-range handheld devices, some automative displays, industrial control panels.
 
FSTN: [Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic]: Best contrast (20:1 to 40:1) and view angles among all 3 types. Film compensation layer corrects color distortion in STN. So if you need more professional look display, readable in various angle and light, and accept higher cost [e.g., a 3.5'' 240*160 FSTN display on a 1kpcs basis, would be around 10 USD], then it would be a good choice.
Typical Applications: High-end handhelds, medical devices, sophisticated industrial equipment, portable measuring instruments.
 

 
Cost Breakdown of a graphic LCD Module
 
LCD Panel [LCD+Liquid Crystal] 30-40 %: size and resolution, FSTN quality, glass quality.
 
Driver IC 10-15%: e.g. , UC1608 or ST7529, the chip price also fluctuates.
 
PCBA 10-15%: Holds the IC, connectors, passive components.
 
Back Light 10-15%: It's optional, and the LEDs + light guide film cost also have quality difference.
 
Polarizer and Films 5-10%: Normally for STN or FSTN displays.
 
Assembly and Labor 10-15%: Manual/ Semi-automatic assembly, bonding, soldering. Normally for a 5k-10kpcs order, we can arrange semi to fully automatic assembly. But some procedures also require much human labor, as the corresponding auto-equipment needs high cost and long-time developing.

Packaging (1-2 %): Tray or Blister packaging for shipping protection.
