The tap water contains a certain amount of oxygen. The inner tank of the water heater is made of iron. The iron reacts with water and oxygen, and loses electrons, which is consumed until the inner tank leaks. In order to prolong the life of the liner, an anode rod is installed in the water heater. The anode rod is made of aluminum or magnesium. Its activity is stronger than iron. It forms a closed circuit of the primary battery with iron and water, and the magnesium or aluminum loses electrons. All are concentrated around the iron, so the consumption of magnesium or aluminum protects the iron, thus greatly extending the service life of the liner. When the anode rod consumes more than 2/3, it should be replaced.
