Calcium chloride anhydrous (CaCl2) is a common salt that behaves as a typical ionic halide and is solid at room temperature. It is widely used in brine for refrigeration plants, for ice and dust control on roads, and in concrete. It can be produced directly from limestone, though large quantities are also produced as a by-product of the Solvay process. Because of its hygroscopic nature, it must be kept in tightly sealed containers. It is also used to turn kelp into a solid.
- Used in highways, expressways, parking lots, and ports; acts as a dryer for nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide.
- Acts as a dehydration agent in the production of alcohol, ester, aether, and acrylic acid.
- Serves as an important cryogen in freezing machines and ice making.
- Speeds up the hardening of concrete and increases the cold resistance of construction sand pulp.
- In ports, acts as a fog-removing agent, a dust-collecting agent on roads, and a fireproof agent for textiles; also used as a protective and refining agent in aluminum-magnesium metallurgy.
- Acts as a precipitator in the production of lake paint and as a raw material for producing calcium salt; in the algae sodium and bean industries it acts as a flocculant.
