CHROME ROD PROTECTION EXPLAINED
Chrome-plated rod and bar products normally contain from 0.0005” maximum to 0.001” minimum hard chrome plate.
depending upon product specifications.
This hard chrome coating is applied primarily for wear resistance though it does provide considerable corrosion resistance as well.
However, there are occasions when the rod is not being cycled and the surface is exposed to the elements which will allow corrosion to take place. For example, brand new equipment may be stored outside for a considerable period of time at a manufacturer’s plant, or an equipment dealer may hold inventory on its lot. In these instances, it is best to provide some additional corrosion protection. An inexpensive application of a rust inhibitor can be applied to prevent corrosion and thereby preserve the quality of the hard chrome coating and the life of the cylinder.
