About Fiber Optic Patch Cables

Single Mode vs Multi Mode Cables
Single Mode Fiber Optic Cable
Single mode fiber optic cable features a small diametral core that allows only one mode of light to propagate. This reduces light reflections, lowers attenuation, and enables signals to travel longer distances. Typically used by Telcos, CATV companies, and educational institutions for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications.
Multi Mode Fiber Optic Cable
Multimode fiber optic cable has a large diametral core that allows multiple modes of light to propagate. This increases light reflections, enabling more data transmission but with higher dispersion and attenuation over long distances. Ideal for short-distance data and audio/video applications in LANs.
Multi-mode fibers are described by their core and cladding diameters, typically 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm. Current multi-mode fiber types include OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4, each with specific performance characteristics for different Ethernet applications.
