A fiber optic patch cable is a fiber optic cable capped at either end with connectors that allow it to be rapidly connected to CATV, optical switches, or other telecommunication equipment. Its protective layer is designed to connect optical transmitters, receivers, and terminal boxes.
Single Mode fiber optic cable has a small diametral core that allows only one mode of light to propagate, reducing light reflections and lowering attenuation. This enables signals to travel longer distances, making it ideal for long-distance, higher bandwidth applications by Telcos, CATV companies, and educational institutions.
Multimode fiber optic cable has a large diametral core that allows multiple modes of light to propagate, enabling more data to pass through at a given time. However, it has higher dispersion and attenuation rates over long distances, making it suitable for short-distance data and audio/video applications in LANs.
