MPO connector is a connector for ribbon cables with at least 8 fibers, which is designed to provide multi-fiber connectivity in one connector to support high bandwidth and high-density cabling system applications. It is compliant with the IEC 61754-7 standard and the U.S. TIA-604-5 Standard.
Industry standards call out three different polarity methods for MPOs—Method A, Method B and Method C. And each method uses different types of MPO cables.
The MPO connector relies on the pins and holes to align the ferrules for the entire row(s) of fibers between the pins. As shown in the drawing below, the MPO connector can have 1 to 6 rows of 12 fibers each, although only two versions, 12 or 24 fibers, have gained significant market acceptance.
24-fiber MTP/MPO cable is commonly used to establish 100GBASE-SR10 links between CFP to CFP transceivers. It allows the use of the ratified 100GBASE-SR10 20-fiber technology today, maximizing the infrastructure investment in the event of 4*25 Gb/s ratification.
OM4 fiber is designed to enhance the system cost benefits enabled by 850nm VCSELs for existing 1 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s applications as well as future 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s systems.
OM4 fiber supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and OIF applications, allowing extended reach upwards of 550 meters at 10 Gb/s for ultra long building backbones and medium length campus backbones.
