Machine Introduction
This testing equipment determines whether toy edges present an unreasonable risk of injury by identifying hazardous sharp edges according to international safety standards.
Product Information
The tester evaluates accessible edges on toys to determine injury potential. A PTFE tape-coated mandrel rotates 360° along the test edge. If the tape is cut ≥13mm (50% of circumference), the edge is classified as hazardous. This test is mandatory for toys intended for children under 8 years, both before and after use/abuse testing.
Test Principle
The hardened steel shaft (simulating children's fingers) meets strict specifications:
- Surface Rockwell hardness: ≥40
- Surface roughness: ≤0.40 microns
- Diameter: 9.35mm ± 0.12mm
- Applied force: 6N (1.35lb) at 23mm/sec ±4mm/sec rotation speed
The test edge is classified as hazardous if it cuts through the simulated skin tape during rotation.
Testing Procedure & Results Interpretation
- Apply PTFE tape to mandrel and rotate 360° along test edge
- Edge is hazardous if tape is cut ≥50% of circumference
- Test only accessible edges identified during toy evaluation
- For untestable edges, simulate conditions or test components separately
- Maintain perpendicular alignment and consistent pressure during testing
