AZ31B is a wrought magnesium base alloy with good high-temperature strength and ductility as well as corrosion resistance and weldability. Increased strength is obtained by strain hardening with a subsequent partial anneal (H24 and H26 tempers).

Easy to Process
Magnesium AZ31B alloy is easy to operate. But it is flammable, so the production should be taken care of. In the process of production, some people will use lubricant to make the process much easier.
Forming
Magnesium AZ31B alloy is formed by preheating at 260°C (500°F).
Welding
It is welded based on the tungsten arc welding techniques by combing the metal arc and gas.
Annealing
It is stress relieved at 149°C (300°F) for 30 to 60 minutes followed by cooling in air. Full annealing can be done at 344°C (650°F) followed by slowly cooling in the furnace.
Heat Treatment
Thermal treatment is available for increasing the strength of this alloy after fabrication.
Applications
- Magnesium AZ31B alloy is widely used in aerospace applications and general computer and electronic area.
- Sheet and plate in AZ31B find application in medium strength service at temperatures below 150°C. Diverse uses including aerospace, aircraft, concrete tools, 3C (cell phone / camera / computer), speaker cones and textile machinery can all benefit from light weight AZ31B.
- AZ31B is non-magnetic and has high electrical and thermal conductivity filling the requirements for RFI and EMI shielding in the electronics and computer industries.
- Superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet at high or low temperatures allows production of a wide variety of intricate parts for automotive uses. Monocoque construction utilizing formed sheet can be adapted to many commercial applications.
