The material exhibits a two‑stage decomposition profile — phenolic resin degrades between 350–450°C and aramid fiber between 450–600°C — forming a protective char residue of 25–35% that acts as a fire barrier.

This translates to extended ignition times, low heat release rates, and minimal smoke and toxicity emissions (low O.S.U.) — critical for transport aircraft construction.

Beyond fire protection, Nomex® honeycomb core delivers effective thermal insulation.
