When the car turns and the body leans sideways, the suspension on both sides does not bounce in the same way. The outer suspension will press against the stabiliser bar, which will twist. The elasticity of the bar will prevent the wheels from lifting, thus keeping the body as balanced as possible and acting as a lateral stabiliser.
