According to the Canadian Agri-Food Research Council's Recommended Code of Practice for The Care and Handling of Farm Animals, a loose box should be 10'×10' (3m×3m) to 12'×12' (3.6m×3.6m) for an average size riding horse. These are minimum recommendations. Larger stalls provide more comfort, especially for draft horses or draft crosses who need extra space to move freely and lie down comfortably.
For foaling stalls, many prefer more generous space. The simplest solution is to remove partitions between two regular stalls. This flexibility means you don't need dedicated foaling stall construction.
Stall doors should feature secure, horse-proof latches to prevent escapes. Swinging doors must open outward into the alley and remain securely fastened when closed. Sliding doors should operate smoothly, and all grain room doors must be locked. Minimum door width should be 4 ft (1.2m).
Regardless of management style, all horse stalls share the same safety fundamentals. The stall size should accommodate the horse's dimensions and activity level, with 12'×12' being standard for a 1,000-pound horse. More active horses or those spending extended time in stalls benefit from larger spaces.
