A double-acting cylinder is used in applications where:

Even with applications where gravity (or weight) can assist retraction, hydraulic pressure is often applied to double-acting cylinders to control acceleration, change the rate of travel and cushion the stoppage. Travel in one direction always differs from travel in the other, all things being equal; the push action requires more force and is slower, but more work output is generated. The pulling action is faster, but less work output is created.

Double-acting cylinders also act as a reservoir, because fluid flows under pressure to the piston side to extend the hydraulic cylinder. On the return stroke, the fluid flows under pressure to the rod side of the cylinder to retract it. The cylinder is therefore holding most of the fluid, so if you have a limited amount of space in your application, e.g. with DC hydraulic power units, you can effectively use a much smaller reservoir or tank to hold the oil.
