Core Insert Molding Process

Core Insert molding shares similarities with overmolding, incorporating different materials into the same part to enhance properties. While both processes slightly increase molded part costs, this is typically offset by eliminating manual post-molding operations. Lead time for overmolded and insert molded parts is 15 days—longer than single-part injection molding but significantly faster than traditional Core insert molding.

Unlike overmolding's two-step process requiring separate shots for substrate and overmold, Core insert molding is completed in a single operation. Threaded inserts, bushings, sleeves, or bosses are manually placed into the mold before plastic injection, resulting in improved part strength and reliability.

Additional benefits include product weight reduction when plastic parts with metal inserts replace all-metal components, and frequently lower overall costs compared to parts requiring assembly operations.
